On September 20, Li Bingren, Chief Economist of the Ministry of Housing and Urban–Rural Development, stated at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office that there are currently five major issues hindering the application of renewable energy in buildings in China that need to be addressed.

The five major issues are: the overall scale still needs to be further expanded; the quality of technology and products still needs to be further improved; standards and specifications still need to be further refined; design, construction, operation, and maintenance require further refinement and strengthened management; and personnel capabilities need to be enhanced.

According to Li Bingren, in recent years China has actively promoted the large-scale application of renewable energy in buildings. By the end of 2009, the nationwide installed area for solar thermal applications in buildings had reached 1.179 billion square meters, the installed area for shallow geothermal energy applications stood at 139 million square meters, and the installed capacity of photovoltaic systems integrated into buildings had reached 420.9 megawatts, marking a breakthrough in growth.
